Why it beats that coverage

Dagger puts Y’s seam above X’s 14-yard dig so the deep coverage has to respect two levels. Look for Y if nobody carries the seam, then throw X into the space underneath. Z’s curl and C’s hitch give you shorter answers when both deep routes are covered.

The quarterback’s read

  1. Y on the seam if nobody carries Y
  2. X on the dig
  3. Z on the curl
  4. C as the checkdown

Each player’s job

  • QB: Drop back and check Y’s seam first if nobody carries Y. Move to X on the dig, Z on the curl and C as the checkdown. Stay balanced through the deeper read so you can still deliver the short throw promptly.
  • C: Run a hitch to 4 yards, then come back slightly left to 3.5. Turn toward the quarterback and show your hands. You are the final short option underneath the routes developing downfield.
  • X: Sell the vertical route to 14 yards, then break right and flat on the dig. Hold that depth across the middle. Make a sharp turn so the quarterback can throw into the space below Y’s seam.
  • Y: Run the seam straight toward 20 yards. Keep your speed through the deep middle. Carry the deep defender away from X, and stay ready for the first throw if nobody follows you.
  • Z: Climb to 10 yards and curl back slightly left to 8.5. Face the quarterback in the window outside the dig. You are the third read before C’s checkdown.

When to call Dagger

Use spread with 18 yards to the goal line against Cover 1, Cover 2 or Cover 3. The deep seam stretches the coverage above X’s dig. Call it when the rush is soft enough to let X reach the 14-yard break.

Check your quarterback’s range before adding it to a game plan. Y’s seam and X’s dig both need a longer throw than a stick or flat. Start with the actual field spacing in practice and make sure the quarterback can reach each target under control.

On a longer down, the dig gives you a clear intermediate landmark. If the defense retreats to protect that space, take Z or C underneath. Keep the short completion available instead of holding the ball only for a deep gain.

What closes the dig

A deep defender can carry Y while an underneath defender drops into X’s crossing lane. Cover 2 can squeeze the seam between help inside and above. Your quarterback needs to see the window open before throwing X, even after Y has drawn attention.

If the rush reaches you before the 14-yard break, call Trips Stick for a quicker outside decision. When defenders stay deep over the seam and dig, call Levels to work shorter in routes at 5 and 10 yards. Smash Return shifts the high-and-low decision outside against a soft corner.

Coaching the vertical sale

Mark X’s break at 14 yards. Have X run straight at the defender before turning across the field. A rounded turn carries the receiver closer to deep coverage and delays the throw. Keep the dig flat once the break is made.

Y runs the seam hard on every repetition. Your quarterback checks that route first when it is uncovered, so Y must expect the ball. A receiver who slows down because the play usually goes elsewhere makes the deep read harder.

Practise Z’s curl and C’s hitch as the ball moves through the progression. Both receivers come back toward the quarterback and present a target. Keep their finishing points separate so the short throws have clear lanes.

Finish with pressure arriving at different moments. Take C when the deeper routes need more time than the rush allows. Your quarterback stays behind the line to pass and cannot turn the closed dig into a run past it. The Cover 2 guide puts this seam-and-dig read alongside two outside concepts.
